About Chinese Herbal Medicine

Acupuncture serves to correct imbalances that exist in your body.  It works with what is already there.  Herbs do the same thing, but they can also supplement the body, catalyzing and enhancing physiological function in ways that acupuncture alone does not. Therefore, when appropriate for your condition, your acupuncturist may prescribe a Chinese herbal formula for you to take home.

The pharmacopoeia of Chinese herbology consists largely of plants native to various parts of China, but also includes some minerals and animal-derived substances, so be certain to inform your practitioner of relevant allergies or dietary restrictions.

One of the greatest advantages of Chinese herbal medicine is that it is highly effective, but generally has far fewer – and less severe – adverse side effects than modern pharmaceuticals.  Chinese herbs can often be taken along with prescription drugs, but you should always talk to both your physician and your acupuncturist first to avoid the possibility of undesirable drug/herb interactions.

Chinese herbs often work better when taken in groups, producing effects that single herbs don’t.  For this reason, you will normally be given an herbal formula, rather than a single herb for your condition.  Your practitioner can also tailor any formula to your individual needs by adding or subtracting herbs as appropriate.
